ANNUAL DAVID J. SIMPSON, JR. MEMORIAL CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT PREPARATIONS UNDERWAY
Arlington, GA – David J. Simpson, Jr. is a familiar name that many residents of Southwest Georgia remember fondly. David was an incredible husband, a terrific “daddy”, and a wonderful son and friend…but most would recognize him as a pillar of his community and a man who gave his life to serving others.
David moved to Arlington with his family in 1973. His uncle, the late Dr. R.E. Jennings, had established his practice as a physician in Arlington in the 1950’s, and invited his brother-in-law, Jack Simpson, to found a pharmacy (Arlington Rexall Drugs) in town. David admired and respected his uncle, Dr. R.E. Jennings, and, at an early age aspired to be like him, a man who loved to care for others through medicine. Dr. Jennings and David enjoyed a very close relationship through their years together in Arlington. At the age of sixteen, Dr. Jennings introduced David to the game of golf, something that David said became one of his passions in life.
David graduated from Southwest Georgia Academy in 1976 and attended Emory University and then Mercer University’s Southern School of Pharmacy, where he received his Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. In 1979, he met and married his wife Cathy Hollander Simpson. After graduating in 1981, David returned to Arlington where he partnered with his father to own and operate Arlington Rexall Drugs. Soon after returning, David and Cathy welcomed twin daughters, Ashley S. Hutchins and Allison S. Curington, into the world. In 1989, they added a son to their brood, David J. Simpson, III (“Dee”).
David Simpson loved the community he served, especially his patients. David would go at all hours of the night and day to fill a prescription for a patient in need and often neglected himself because of his concern for others. But, if David ever had a break, one would most likely find him in Athens (UGA), watching his favorite team play football, or on the golf course! David loved golf so much that he once took his family on a golf vacation to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, just so he could play the courses that he had read about in magazines. He got his first hole-in-one there!
Sadly, David was only 48 years old when he passed away from a massive heart attack. He suffered from diabetes and hypertension, and that is why his family and friends find it so fitting to name this golf tournament, after David Simpson, a man who loved golf, but, first and foremost, loved to help others. All proceeds from this event will help to purchase cardiac and diabetic equipment for the Calhoun Memorial Hospital. It is our hope that this tournament will continue for many years to come and help to improve his community’s healthcare services so that many lives may be helped or saved.
The Fifth Annual David J. Simpson, Jr. Memorial Charity Golf Tournament is scheduled for Friday May 18th at the Crooked Oak Golf Club in Colquitt, Georgia. This two-man team scramble, following a complimentary lunch served at Noon, begins at 1:00pm with a shotgun start. The team entry fee is $150. Cash and prizes will be awarded for first and second place in each flight, closest to the pin, longest drive, and a prize for a hole-in-one. All proceeds will benefit the Helping Hands and Caring Hearts Volunteer Group and are designated for the purchase of cardiac equipment for Calhoun Memorial Hospital.
